Holiday Traditions

Carl and I have been talking lately about starting traditions during the holidays. Since we are usually not at our house for the actual holidays, I guess we do have some traditions with family, but want to come up with a few of our own. Nothing big or costly, just simple things like homemade hot chocolate at Christmas and reading the Christmas story on Christmas day before the Christmas meal, or a certain homemade pie always at Thanksgiving. It's so fun to have such traditions, because even though they are simple, they are yours and make the holiday time special and specifically yours. Thinking of this made me wonder, what are your traditions, if you don't mind sharing?

I like to get up really early and start some coffee then I make some fresh OJ and I start cooking breakfast. After I get it all done I put it all on a tray with a rose and some mistletoe and then I go in and wake up April and she wakes up, punches me in the face and yells "WHY ARE YOU WAKING ME UP SO EARLY???"

OK maybe not but it would be funny if that ever did happen.

Well, our anniversary is Dec.14 so every year we buy a new ornament for the tree that symbolizes how we celebrated our anniversary that year. The first year we saw the nutcracker so I bought a of course, nutcracker ornament. One year we went Christmas shopping so I bought an ornament at Old Navy. Another year we went to zoolights so I bought an ornament in the gift shop there. Last year we went to Seattle Symphony so I bought a violin ornament there. It's neat to look at the tree with all the diff. ornaments and reflect on our marriage and how we've celebrated it. Another tradition: we each get new jammies every year. One I want to start this year is to make homeade cinnamon rolls on Christmas morning.

My husband is crazy...for the record he has never made me breakfast "on christmas morning"....because he hasn't been home most Christmas'. We have spent 2 of the 5 christmas' together. Anyhow, I usually make homemade donuts on Christmas morning. We have been talking about starting a few of our own too. We always got new jammies and that was the gift we got to open christmas eve. Then when mom took pics on christmas morning we were all in our new p.j.'s...that was always fun!

On Thanksgiving night my family always watched "It's a Wonderful Life" and ate chips and dip and peanut m&ms. Even now, with us all grown and gone, my parents still do that with whoever is home that year.
On Christmas Eve we got to open our stocking presents before we went to bed. Now I do that with my own kids, also. We also buy a new ornament for the tree every year. We all pick it out together and we make sure it reminds us of something important that happened the past year.
P.S. I LOVE the "new jammies on Christmas Eve" idea, April--I am SO starting that this year with my kids.

We buy Lauren & Sabrina new Christmas PJs to open on Christmas Eve - they love it - and it makes for fun pics on Christmas morning! Mostt importantly, we always read THE CHRISTMAS STORY (Luke 2) before anything else on Christmas morning - then we eat "Monkey Bread" - THEN we choose who will be "Santa Claus" for that year to pass out Christmas presents! Fun traditons!

Every year we put a chocolate orange and new toothbrushes in the kids' stockings. Kind of an oxymoron - I know. We also get together with family on Christmas Eve and have a big dinner. I love family traditions during the holidays - so comforting.

Wow--that pajamas thing is pretty popular. I feel like I've been left out of a VERY important loop for my whole life. =)

I just love the whole toothbrush thing, he he, but really, last year we did start the chocolate orange thing. I'll tell you what, our kiddos LOVED that! So I'll keep it up! We also do crackers and summer sausage, jalepeno poppers, ect. for dinner on Christmas Eve. I also have always loved the p.j. thing but have never done it.
